Sex & Fury DVD Movie Review

Pinky Violence movies are all about excess. The main objectives of these movies are to show a lot of skin, show a lot of blood, and have an interesting, easy to follow story. Sex & Fury, from director Norifumi Suzuki, is not only one of the best Pinky Violence movies; it is one of the best exploitation movies ever made.

Reiko Ike plays Ochu, a woman searching for the three yakuza men who murdered her father. Ochu's father gave her three flower cards, each with a different animal on it. These animals correspond with the tattoos of the assassins. Ochu uses her phenomenal gambling talents and her sex appeal to infiltrate the yakuza family and eventually get her revenge. Christina Lindberg, from Bo Arne Vibenius's Thriller: A Cruel Picture, plays Christina, an American spy who is also trying to tear the same yakuza family apart.

Motoya Washyo's cinematography is wonderful. The whimsical visuals are always explosive and vibrant, and at times psychedelic. The colorful sets and lighting are not the only things worth watching. Ochu loses her top almost every time she gets into a fight, which makes the movie delightfully naughty and a joy to watch.

The excesses in this movie do not stop at the visuals. The soundtrack is trashy and overdone. The music is reminiscent of both a Batman TV series fight scene and the theme from Shaft. This is, without a doubt, the definitive 70's exploitation movie score.

Sex & Fury never tries to be anything more than pure entertainment and eye candy. The plot is standard revenge movie fare and the acting by everyone other than Reiko Ike is campy and amateurish. The stylish insanity displayed in this movie more than makes up for its many faults. Sex & Fury is the pinnacle of exploitation cinema.
